Jeremiah 11 Commentary

Jeremiah 11 Commentary

We know exactly what is happening here. The LORD plays by the rules – the Abrahamic covenant implemented.

During the time of Moses, the Abrahamic covenant was reduced to the 10 Commandments – commonly referred to as the Law. This was Israel’s part of the covenant. God’s part detailed the LORD’s promise to bless Israel.

The blessing of the LORD was reduced to a promise of a land flowing with milk and honey. It was always going to be a piece of land! It was always going to be a model of Eden!

“Flowing with milk and honey” is a picture of prosperity resulting from nature’s gifts and the fruit of man’s work – the two-legged blessing. One is natural while the other one is cultivated.

But Israel has violated the covenant. A curse rests on the nation.

Israel burns incense to Baal. Idolatry. A showstopper!

In the immediate context, Israel experiences scattering to Babylon. There is intense pain and suffering. But it hasn’t happened yet. The hope of the chapter is that the nation hears the message and repents.

Yes, there is destruction over the horizon. But the good news of the LORD Jesus Christ is that we can avoid destruction by turning to Him for salvation.

Then there is a plot to kill the prophet – one of the many plots against Jeremiah. There isn’t a red carpet for this kind of work!

But the LORD has His own plan. In the world of plans and schemes – evil schemes. Let the saint know that the LORD has His own plan. Let not the saint fear.
