Jeremiah 10b Commentary
How does the Verse 23 fit into Adam’s original mandate of dominion, prosperity, and fruitfulness?
“LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” Verse 23.
How does Adam execute his role if he cannot direct his own steps?
Of course, Adam before the fall of Genesis 3 is different from Adam after Genesis 3.
Before Genesis 3, Adam is in the image of God. After Genesis 3, Adam is in his own image – he becomes an idol! An image other than God’s image is an idol!
Therefore, Verse 23 underlines humanity’s problem. We direct our own steps. Our customs are futile. Verse 3.
We create death – dead idols. Little nothings! We pretend we have it under control. Our lives are in our own hands. We can define our own destiny.
Verse 23 forces an understanding that life isn’t a straight line without God’s guidance! Anything outside of God’s way is death and nothingness!
The LORD God retains total control over creation – His creation.
On the other hand is humanity, “Altogether dull-hearted and foolish”.
Foolishness! You probably understand our own inability to define our own destiny!
We don’t make cars; we make idols. Material things become a sorting mechanism. We classify humans according to material possessions. We create confusion and more confusion.
Foolishness! Dull-hearted.
Chapter 10 points to the Creator God. “He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, and has stretched out the heavens at His discretion.”
Maker of all things! Verse 16.
