Isaiah 46 Commentary
The god that you carry in your bag isn’t a god at all! Indeed, this should be the end for Babylon’s gods, so we think. But Babylon’s gods have survived to this day. Why?
Mortals keep recreating them!
The existence of many religions with respectable names, seats, and reputation means Babylon’s gods have become stronger. Men have elevated them to viable options.
Religion is described as man’s search for God. In a man’s eye, Babylon’s gods are good laboratories. But this chapter announces the following: “To whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal and compare Me, that we should be alike?” Verse 5.
The chapter invites the world to investigate this claim.
Regardless, the LORD won’t share the same space with other gods.
Bel and Nebo were physical objects, but in reality, they represented abstract god-pretenders. Today these are represented by a host of other gods wrapped in the many ‘good’ philosophies that we have held on to. Hard work, intelligence, education, and good governance, among many others.
Navigate the path of your life. It is the LORD God who has carried you from birth right up to this point. Forget the gods you have carried in your bag!
Remember the moment when none of the gods were present. Isaiah is constantly reminding the saint to forget his credentials and his own name.
The LORD moves in, and the trusted gods are no more!
The same God will be at the end of your line. Do you know Him?
