Isaiah 44 Commentary
Chapter 44 is a commercial! Excellent salesmanship! What an advert!
Yes, an advert, but one alarmingly true and factual!
I can be trusted. Things happen exactly as planned. I do the planning. I perform my word. I won’t forget Israel. I have blotted out Israel’s transgressions.
Sadly, Israel cannot see these facts. So, what do they see? Pretenders. Fake gods. Idols they have made in the backyard. How can a piece of wood become a man’s god? The LORD God appeals to logic.
The LORD God is so eager for reconciliation that He puts zero conditions for Israel’s return. He has forgiven them. Let them simply return. Let them come back to the LORD – to the worship of the one true God of Abraham.
This is so beautiful! Let not the saint complicate the sinner’s path back to his or her Creator God.
As usual, Isaiah is a mixed act. We can see the physical return to Jerusalem. King Cyrus and his decree for Israel’s return come into the picture. It’s a historical fact.
But Isaiah’s emphasis lies on a return to the LORD God in true worship. Without this “return”, physical location isn’t important.
Idolatry is nonsense. Check it out for yourself. If a man cannot save himself, what less what a man makes! It should be common knowledge! Why should we expect the science we manufacture to save us?
Is it not foolishness to expect technology to save us?
Go ahead and examine it. Explore technology to its finest prints and see its emptiness. The idols we fashion in tech labs!
If we cannot make ourselves happy, how can what we create make us happy? Entertainment is a huge industry, but it is all vanity – the empty pursuit of joy. Ponder it. Navigate the spaces of life and see it for yourself.
What men and women make won’t fill the gap that the absence of the LORD creates.
Chapter 44 is one beautiful pearl inserted in the pages of the Old Testament, but its real value is for my neighbors today. Let them hear the good news that the LORD has forgiven them.
