Isaiah 17 Commentary
God will punish Syria and Israel. Israel alongside Syria; probably because Israel is indistinguishable from Syria.
When an individual fails to distinguish herself from wickedness, you are sure of their punishment together with the wicked.
Then there is hope – a day when people turn to their Creator for help. Verse 7.
In the meantime, the prophet speaks of days when men and women look to ungodly worship systems.
Nothing has changed. The ungodly worship systems still remain. Asherah poles still exist in their original form in some places. However, in many places, Asherah poles have been replaced with more advanced ungodly worship systems.
Let mortals turn to the LORD when there is time. You don’t want to regret having chased wind all your life, or having your hope in emptiness. There is even more pain when you have always known the emptiness of your choices.
Every knee bows down, and every tongue confesses that Jesus is the Creator God, but should your confession come on the day of your punishment?
The Scripture is written for knowledge that could lead to repentance and salvation. No one should side with wickedness and face punishment. The vehicle called wickedness is headed for a terrible crash; let every passenger get out!
Isaiah has this vision from the LORD to ensure that people can read it and turn to the LORD today, when they can. Let the people see that the gardens they have planted haven’t yielded anything of value to them. It is all emptiness!
