Proverbs 25 Commentary
Reading Luke 14:8-10 is like reading Proverbs 25. Well, the same voice is speaking!
Then you know you can read these lines with expectations!
Proverbs are like jewels in gold wrappings. The wrappings are also valuable! Read verses 6 and 7, and then read Luke 14, verses 8 to 10. The Old Testament version is a proverb but edible, fully processed, and valuable immediately. The New Testament version removes the gold wrappings and exposes the real jewel!
The king in the Old Testament version, read as King, becomes the host at the wedding feast. He is the one who lifts up the humble, but brings down the haughty. Gold wrappings are tasty, but the scripture wants us to see the real King before whom all must remain humble.
You can read these lines with expectations because the king is actually the King of kings. He knows every humble heart. He lifts them while casting down proud hearts.
It’s comforting because these events happen this side of creation, in realtime!
Can you see the statement, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged”.
Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. Verse 24. Again, the scripture is talking about the troubles of Lady Wickedness. She is never just a guest you entertain once in a while. Wickedness stays and is a constant menace. You are no longer in charge. Don’t cheat yourself with the thought that you can possibly have a spare bedroom. Yours is life in the corner of the roof!
Of course, this picture is extreme. But how real! Wickedness is cruel to her victims. Think about it.
On the other hand is Lady Wisdom. Self-rule underpins self-control. It is the blessing of dominion that the LORD seeks to restore.
Once in a while, the scripture gives away its location. From Verse 1, we know the Book of Proverbs isn’t complete until after King Hezekiah’s time.
The lines today speak from a king’s point of view. Of course, the King. And they are truly beautiful!
