Psalm 114 Commentary

Psalm 114 is like a PowerPoint presentation of God’s interventions. The graphics are truly powerful. They also relate to us a rich history of Israel’s experiences under the watchful eye of Yahweh.

God intervened. The material world also responded. Creation answered the call. The Red Sea parted. At Mount Sinai, the mountain shook like a loose cone on the floor. River Jordan stood at attention until Israel passed unharmed and unhindered.

Creation says yes to God’s presence, staying ready to act as instructed, to the extent of disobeying their own rules. It should be simple; elements of nature embody God’s power – a manifestation of God’s greatness.

Let the earth tremble. Probably, humanity is the thought behind the term Earth. In which case, the call to worship is most probable.

The mountain is known for its immovability, the rock for its dryness. The water flows from a high point to a low point. It is a scientific situation. Water always flows. When these elements of creation work in reverse, let the earth tremble. Let humanity worship.

The stability of the mountain is a miracle, so is the shaking of the same. Saints stand in awe of creation.

Jerusalem is the seat of government. God’s rule extends from Judah. Judah is the strongest of Jacob’s sons. We can draw out the thought of strength in the Christian walk. It is never one in weakness. Sin is always the result whenever weakness surfaces. It is always the symptom of the absence of dominion.

The psalm talks about the mighty acts of the LORD after the mention of God’s rule. Could this be telling us the importance of God’s all-powerful role in overcoming the saint’s obstacles?

If the saint is struggling with sinful habits, then the saint can reflect on God’s power to reverse the flow of nature. Addictions, appetites for wrongdoing, and greediness are all natural flows that the LORD can reverse.

And out of a rock, living water can flow. The wicked man at his worst point can always be a source of living water. And why not? The LORD works miracles like this in men.
