Psalm 113 Commentary
The term ‘heavens’ may loosely be translated as the skies. However, the term ‘universe’ would be more appropriate for our day. The LORD is enthroned above the universe. The thought would be that the LORD created the universe, among many other things.
The universe is nothing but space, measured by parameters such as width, length, depth, and height. It’s a material world forming an environment for humans and other created beings. But there is much more beyond our intelligence!
In simple terms, the LORD created space and time. Within space is the material world that humanity exploits in time.
The LORD is above all of this. Yet the LORD decides to stoop down and enter the world of space and time – the world of humans. He checks every detail.
One of the humans is aware of God’s presence. He sits down and writes this psalm of praise.
He has Israel in mind when he talks about the poor being raised from the ash heap; from slavery and oppression. They walk out of Egypt proud and free, like honored guests. Even receiving gifts from the oppressors.
He is thinking about barrenness as unfruitfulness. The LORD who mandated man to be fruitful stoops down and makes individuals fruitful once again.
The saint is drawn to the work of Jesus Christ in restoring mankind to fruitfulness, dominion, and prosperity.
Praise the LORD!
