Psalm 148 Commentary
The term heavens in verse 1 may refer to the universe. Let the elements of the universe praise the LORD. They won’t say anything or compose songs of praise like humans do. This is praise by presence – the evidence of God’s ultimate sovereignty.
The highest heavens may refer to spaces not covered by human imagination. It remains unmeasured width. This thought is by itself praise.
Then we have the known elements like the sun, the moon, and the stars on the list of ‘praise singers. They display the glory of the Creator God.
Angels are known to have existed before humans. They serve as massagers and live in complete obedience. Let them praise the LORD!
The mention of the commandments of the LORD may easily draw the thought of the well-known 10 Commandments. However, here the thought is focused on God’s power working through both material and none material elements of creation. Gravity is one such element; rain is another. Light, wind, snow, and other elements of weather are all commandments of the LORD.
Mountains, trees, animals: both wild and domesticated; praise the LORD. If creation is a crime, then the LORD God won’t escape conviction because the evidence against Him is everywhere! Humans are reliable witnesses. That is praise!
Of course, the LORD also created humans. Unlike the other elements of God’s creation, humans were made in the likeness of God. They praise God by being human, in all their different manifestations, men, women, young or old. Human as per original design. But because they are gods, they can create praise: verbal declarations of God’s greatness, declarations in art, declarations in thought and feelings. It is the admiration of or a strong liking for God’s works.
Humans can look at themselves and see the Creator God’s continued work and praise the LORD. Indeed, praise the LORD!
