Jeremiah 16 Commentary
Yesterday, we read about the “four terrible things” against Israel. Today, in the opening section of Chapter 16, we can add another terrible thing against Israel. “They will die of diseases.” Of course, we have already read about war and starvation.
Widespread wars, starvation, and diseases could be elements of destruction in the hands of the LORD.
The LORD will withdraw His peace. He won’t show them love and mercy. Wealth won’t shield anyone from these disasters.
Is it possible that the LORD of love could be so harsh? Yes. Our ancestors turned away from the LORD. We have beaten their record!
Read Scripture and see this pattern. When men gathered to sin, the Creator God moved in to scatter. It’s a fallacy to think that today’s sinner will escape God’s wrath.
“Each one follows the dictates of his own evil heart, so that no one listens to Me” Jeremiah 16:12b
This is our problem today. “Do as thou wilt”. The LGBT community champions this slogan. But let men watch this space. The Creator God has His own standards!
Israel’s problem is a failure to hold to these standards.
But there is hope. There is a return. The plan of redemption is in place. Of course, we know the Scripture is pointing to the days of the Servant, Immanuel, or the Son with the government upon His shoulders. Isaiah labored on this subject with amazing justice.
Every word of the LORD is intentional – even examples have real value. The mention of fishermen pictures a world of traps. Hunters would be the ruthless and powerful enemies of righteousness. Verse 16.
As is often the case, Jeremiah ends with a petition. Let the nations know who the Creator God is. There is but one God – the Creator God. Won’t the nations have the same privilege as Israel and know this God? The LORD is happy with Jeremiah’s petition and promises to make Himself known among the nations.
The notion that the LORD Jesus Christ is the power of God in the world and for everyone isn’t at all misplaced. He came, and He comes to rule – the government on His shoulders. The year of the LORD comes, and men and women can experience renewal.
