Jeremiah 9 Commentary
Why is Jeremiah wishing for more tears? Well, you need more tears when you have endless trouble!
How about changing location? Isn’t there a possibility of running away from trouble?
Jeremiah’s world is real, and so is God’s word – current with a “happening-right-now” feel to it. So the prophet speaks as he sobs. The mourning is real! Trouble is both real and present.
The existence of deep trouble is problematic in itself and by itself. But the situation gets desperate when men and women don’t understand God’s word.
Who is the wise man who may understand this? Verse 12.
Who has understood that Israel’s problem is walking according to the dictates of their own hearts?
Think of our own world where the interest of self is elevated above the law of the Creator God. The LGBT world feeds on freedom of self. “Do as thou wilt.”
But there is a God whose standards are supreme. They must be obeyed. There are consequences for disobedience:
“Behold, I will feed them, this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. I will scatter them also among the Gentiles, whom neither they nor their fathers have known. And I will send a sword after them until I have consumed them.”
But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows the LORD. Yes, the LORD of “lovingkindness, righteousness, and judgment.”
Yes, there is “lots” of love, but also “lots” of justice! The world we know won’t be the same endlessly. The Judge will one day sit down to execute justice.
