Isaiah 59 Commentary

Isaiah 59 Commentary

It is interesting to see how the LORD addresses Himself to you, to them, and finally to us. It is about your iniquities. Their iniquities, or our iniquities. Whose iniquities?

Then the author runs his own commentary as he delivers the word of the LORD.

“For our transgressions are multiplied before You.” Verse 12.

Therefore, the LORD speaks, then the author also speaks. The NKJV makes it easier, as it differentiates between “you” and “You”.

But we still have to talk about “you”, and it may refer to both them and us – them the unrepentant and us the remnant.

The word of the LORD hasn’t gone out fruitlessly. It has achieved its purpose among us. Each generation has its own remnant, individuals who have held on to the truth.

This chapter reminds the remnant of the constant need to look to God’s righteous environment. It’s a line that constantly divides the population. On one side is wickedness. On the other side are God’s faithful servants under the rule of the Son – Immanuel.

The servants of the LORD are still part of this world for a special purpose. They must constantly watch out for wickedness.

They must watch out for lies that our hearts can easily conceive. The Scripture, therefore, remains an important rearguard.

Chapter 59 talks about you, them, and us.

Then the Creator God looked and was displeased. He was appalled that you, them, and we all got together and sinned, and there was none to intervene. So the LORD decided to do it Himself – the Branch, Immanuel, and lately, the Servant.

Think of the past, the present, and the future. Then think of yourself, them, and us all. Combine these thoughts, and you have Chapter 59!

Then God intervenes. He would bring justice and righteousness. Redemption would come to Zion, but only to the repentant. Probably verse 21 is referring to the repentant, the remnant – yes, them and others in each generation. “My Spirit, who is in you, will not depart from you.”
