Isaiah 53b Commentary
He was taken from prison and from judgment. Verse 8. The first partition of Isaiah is nothing but a court session.
The LORD presides over the court session. Judah, Israel, and then the other nations are all judged. They are guilty. They are sentenced.
Of course, the entire world is brought to the same courtroom. Chapter 24. The verdict is the same as for Judah.
But Chapter 53 announces that it’s the Servant who goes in. He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows! Verse 4.
Whose sorrows?
Of course, the sorrows of Judah, Israel, and the other nations. The transgressions of humanity. The New Testament puts it this way: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23.
Yes, it’s a court session, but the strangest of them all. The just Judge has kept two doors open. The jail door is open, so is the grace door. We have constantly seen different versions of the grace door: Cleansing for a “white as snow” finish, the Mountain of the LORD, the Branch, Immanuel, the Son born to us, and lately, the Servant.
Chapters 52 and 53 put the pieces together.
For the wages of sin is death. We saw how the LORD promised total annihilation of wickedness in His proclamations against the nations, Judah and Israel included. Salvation isn’t for others; it’s for everyone!
Let individuals look to the Servant. It’s him who paid the price for your salvation!
