Isaiah 24b Commentary

Yes, the Creator God destroys the entire world. Verse 1. But what’s the timing like for these events?

‎‎Of course, Isaiah’s visions are complex, timeless visuals. “Timeless” because the audience is “timeless”. They make sense today as they did several centuries before the Messiah.

‎‎It’s helpful when the reader scans the entire space of time, which the scripture amply provides. Then we can begin to see the color and shape of these events.

‎‎”It shall come to pass in that day that the Lord will punish on high the host of exalted ones, and on the earth the kings of the earth.” Verse 21.

‎‎Check Colossians 2v15. “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

‎‎For the New Testament church, this was a past event. Calvary. “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16v33.

Of course, we have trouble understanding the timing of events based on the tenses used: past, present, and future. These time stamps apply to mortals.

“…grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death… 2 Timothy 1v9-10.

Let’s look at grace. The giving of grace and its revelation come at different points in time. Depending on what you are looking at, the same event can be both in the past and in the future. Of course, all of it is from our view of things.

But why does Ephesians still talk of “the principalities and rulers” if Calvary defeated them?

Yes, remain at Calvary, and all is well. But remember the definition of victory and don’t confuse it with definitions from the defeated world!

Not everything is complex. Destruction means destruction. Destruction meant physical destruction of Judah, Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Tyre, and Sidon, alongside many others. Pillars of human society are never meant to last! Hope in these human structures is as fragile as the structures themselves!

But there exists an everlasting Kingdom of the Son, the child born to us. It knows no end. It’s a government of justice, peace, and righteousness. Isaiah 9.
