Isaiah 19 Commentary
The Egyptian’s idols trembling at the sight of the LORD God reminds us of a similar judgment during the great exodus. The idols trembled in fear. They froze and were hopeless. Egypt feared.
In addition to the plague-like trouble, Egypt suffers extreme disorganization, internal strife, lack of direction, and general failure. Commerce and industry are affected. Life is terrible. Wisdom has failed.
The scripture describes life without the worship of the Creator God. It is a complete mess!
In the midst of all this, Judah becomes a source of hope.
The scripture points to a time when the gospel of the LORD Jesus Christ goes to the entire world. Believers gather in submission and obedience to offer their allegiance to the LORD God Almighty.
The LORD will have healed and cleansed them. They form what we call the Body of Christ. They come from around the world – among them Egypt, Assyria, Cush, and Judah. All under the leadership of the Son – the Son born to us, the Branch, or simply Immanuel.
There we have it, salvation isn’t one people’s religion. It isn’t a special song for one people group.
The saint can look back at Egypt’s failed systems. When the LORD confounds humanity, even the very best of us become foolish. But we can plead and find mercy. Then believers, regardless of where they are, can uniformly submit to the leadership and lordship of the Son.
The Nile River is of no help. With the various gods that humanity depends on – commerce and industry, political administration, education, intrinsic wisdom- a time comes when all these elements fail, and an individual has only one option. It is Isaiah’s option: A connection to Judah’s throne in Jerusalem – the eternal government of the Son.
