Song 4 Commentary
A man of few words? Not in this chapter. Not in this drama. Perhaps in some reality show, but not in a real love world. Men talk when stricken by love. Their words aren’t few at all.
He describes his bride’s anatomy in glowing terms. Her smile is generous; her lips are jewel red; her mouth is elegant and inviting; her cheeks are soft and radiant. The sweet and fragrant curves of her body – the man is hopelessly in love! And then he invites the bride to himself.
And all of this by design!
The lesson is simple. Let love – this intense love draw a woman to the man. Not money, fame, or power. Interestingly, the man here is drawn to a woman’s natural endowments. Nothing artificially made up. These are special gifts the LORD gives to the woman.
She has captured his heart – not by trick-and-hook. Plain and natural. Here the man describes his bride as a friend or a sister. Many have described it as a core value in a marriage.
Her beauty did the talking. It was an effective trap. Her response to the man’s request is simply yes. The man can enter his garden and enjoy the fruit. So concludes Chapter 4.
But who wouldn’t help but think about the bride and the groom of the New Testament! The saint is the bride, washed clean and dressed in white for her groom – the LORD Jesus Christ. The scripture is all love openly unpacked. Let the saint simply say yes. The invitation remains.
Of course, the bride of Chapter 4 is flawless. No woman matches her perfect physiological anatomy. Humanity knows that our flawed condition is always an issue in the eyes of the LORD God. And that is where the cross comes in. The LORD Jesus Christ came to make the impossible possible.
One of the many thoughts in this chapter is that a man hopelessly in love with the LORD cannot keep quiet about it. You cannot be drowned in God’s love and keep quiet at the same time. It becomes a moment of praise.
When viewed through the lens of the Book of Ecclesiastes, will this chapter be part of the “everything” that is vanity? Probably yes. The reason is simple. The height of love in this Chapter is impossible in human terms. It’s a target we can only dream of.
The man of Chapter 4 is impossible to find. The woman is also impossible. It leaves us with an eternal longing for more. The “more” is only achieved through the cross. Look to Jesus. Look to perfection. Then know He can cleanse you of all unrighteousness. Then true love can flood your heart!
Then “everything” isn’t vanity!
