Ecclesiastes 5 Commentary

Learn from God’s word. Don’t define your own religion. Is my religion shaped by the word of God?  Have other mortals defined for me? We cannot afford to be mindless about it!

There can be sin in the prayer room. Too many words. Wrong content. Only saying what you think the LORD wants to hear.

Think before you pray. Don’t manipulate heaven with good words. But subject yourself to the manipulation of the word of God. Learn and seek guidance.

Keep your word. Parts of the “Sermon on the Mount” are probably based on the instructions lifted from this chapter.

Verses 8 to 11 are interesting. Don’t be envious. Don’t worry about what you think is a better position for your neighbor. Your neighbor is also envious of what you have. And you think you don’t have anything of value!

What you think of as ‘next level’ has its own ‘next level’. There are more levels from where you are. Even the President has his own ‘next level’. He depends on the economy of the nation! His greatness is dependent on the field. Who isn’t a dependent?

Being a dependent shouldn’t stress you. Every mortal depends on other mortals for things.

Oppressors or bad leaders shouldn’t stress you. They, too, have a leader above them – the Leader, the Creator God, the LORD God Almighty. Ultimate justice awaits everyone.  

Sadly, the chase after the wind continues. It is a loop, a never-ending cycle. The next level you are dreaming of has its own next level, and the story goes on and on. It’s evil.

We jump into the school bus with nothing. While on the bus, and God knows how long the journey lasts, we hold on to stuff here and there. But a time comes when we are thrown off the bus naked, without any of the things we held on to. Exactly the way I was thrown into the bus, so I will be thrown out. We are not as in control as we often want to think.

Great frustration, affliction, and anger. Ever chasing the wind. This is life after Genesis 3. What is the point of life? This is exactly the purpose of this volume: to provoke thoughts like this in the hope that humanity can see the need for God.

It is total chaos on this side of existence. But it can look as it should even this side of creation. Even here and now, God has a purpose to fill the evil blanks.
