Proverbs 29 Commentary
The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright. Verse 27. The scripture is brutally honest!
Your level of trust for the wicked, or comfort with the wicked, determines the extent of your love for God!
Detest the wicked, but also know they detest you!
To expect love and care from the wicked has been a source of pain and suffering for many a saint. The scripture teaches trust in the LORD alone.
The battle of godliness against evil must be understood. “When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases; but the righteous will see their fall.” We already know the winner!
It reveals the complex nature of wickedness in which men and women always stand to lose.
The proverbs appeal to human logic. It is a foolish waste to spend money on prostitutes. Who can argue?
“He who pampers his servant from childhood will have him as a son in the end.” Tolerate an evil habit, and you will be a servant through addiction! An evil habit will be dearer to you than a son!
The scripture teaches aggression against evil. It may also explain God’s rod of correction levied on His children.
This may refer to the pain and suffering that the saint may be subjected to. Physical control measures, closed doors, and restricted access to opportunities. The saint may variously experience such as a matter of discipline. Probably in answer to a prayer: “Lead me not into temptations.”
In this chapter, the scripture disapproves, one by one, the supposed points of advantage for the wicked. The proud man is brought low, not by pride itself but by a higher power.
The scripture makes the point that life is under the control of the Creator God. The rules and principles in this Book don’t define their own ends. The LORD God has total control of events and times. He remains sovereign.
