Proverbs 15 Commentary
This chapter is highlighted by Verse 3. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.”
This may suggest that the LORD is constantly evaluating human works. Bad works are isolated from good works and consequently punished. Probably yes. However, the more likely application would be to look at these teachings as guide rails. In them, we hear the master telling us which way to take.
They formulate boundaries within which mortals can safely operate. They are laws.
Verse 22 may suggest a hit-and-miss scenario. Many counselors provide safety. However, the point narrows down to logic as the means the LORD provides to humans for them to navigate the loops of existence.
It’s an invitation to consider options, possible outcomes, or impact carefully. Who hasn’t sinned before and regretted it shortly afterwards? How they wish they had considered all things!
Clearly, the way of wickedness is all trouble and loss. Deception exists to hide, diminish, or entirely dismiss consequences from careless decisions.
Mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise. It is an observed human reality that men and women generally avoid counsel when they are focused on evil. Of course, the fear is that Wisdom may say no, thereby frustrating their “enjoyment” of sin.
The Book of Proverbs is written to awaken reason. There is nothing to lose when you walk the talk of Wisdom. In fact, even in moments of extreme lack, saints are still okay. Of what use is great wealth with turmoil? Or indeed a great meal with hatred?
Especially that “turmoil” and “hatred” are what any pursuit for wealth seeks to minimize or eliminate entirely!
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Verse 22. Replace the word advisors with the word Jesus and you have the correct application of this verse. It explains the folly of wanting to achieve greatness without the Wisdom of God – Christ.
A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother. Verse 20. It would be a nice verse to quote when talking to youths about the importance of honor and godly conduct. But the meat of Proverbs is this: Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the LORD. Verse 33. The rest fall into place.
