Proverbs 1 Commentary
“I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.” 1 Kings 3:12.
The Book of Proverbs was born out of Solomon’s need for wisdom. It is God’s answer to Solomon’s prayer for wisdom. We are privileged to share this wisdom.
But Chapter 1 says more. It’s about a father’s wisdom passed down to his son, and a mother’s wisdom passed down to her son. Verse 8. Thus, verses 9-19 quote a father’s words to his son. Verses 20-21 may be considered as constituting a mother’s voice.
In this way, the Torah’s instruction to parents to pass on God’s word to their children is fulfilled. Deuteronomy 6:6–7.
It’s also about the wisdom of the “wise” to the simple. Thus, the scripture underlines several ways the LORD speaks to individuals. The godly counsel of believers becomes an indispensable asset for your Christian walk.
The proverbs teach the saint how to live intelligently and resourcefully. The inexperienced person can be clever; the educated can get guidance.
When stuck, as is often the case with humanity, you know what to do. But don’t put on your helmet after you have lost your skull. Do it before! There is a big difference between having a shield and wearing it! The shield must be worn at the right time!
This chapter speaks to us about the need to know the truth and apply it. Unused truth is nothing!
Importantly, to have the knowledge, you must first have reverence for the LORD. On the face of it, a team of wisdom, intelligence, education, experience, skill, diligence, and foresight looks great and can win any game. But without reverence for the LORD, it is all emptiness!
Actually, the fear of the LORD is wisdom. They are not separate!
Don’t be enticed by promises of rewards for a life of ungodliness. The scripture warns the saint. Ungodliness promises a good life, but it is all emptiness. It is a trap you set against yourself. And it won’t fail!
God’s way is the way to go. The other way may promise riches, but it is a trap. You cannot help but think about the great deception back in the Garden of peace and tranquility.
The devil presented the same temptation. There is gain to be had if you disobey. The story repeats itself endlessly each time we give in to temptation. The saint is warned.
