Psalm 132 Commentary

Psalm 132 Commentary

Psalm 132 is a prayer for the LORD’s blessing upon the Sanctuary. Let the LORD bless the Sanctuary with His presence.

The psalmist uses David’s desire to build the LORD a house as a counterweight.

He has a weightier reason – the LORD’s promise to David for an everlasting dynasty.

But there is a problem. God’s promise for an everlasting dynasty for David is hinged on obedience, Israel’s obedience.

We learn from history that David and his sons failed the obedience test.

Probably with this failure in mind, the psalmist now prays, “Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness.”

Of course, this prayer is not answered until the New Testament. With Jesus, the priests are clothed with righteousness. Then David’s dynasty can last forever!

Jesus is the son of David, who lives in perfect obedience. Therefore, His government becomes everlasting.

“Clothed with righteousness,” that would be another term for salvation.

Like David and his sons, we too are bound to fail. Salvation becomes a helped situation. It’s never based on performance by mortals.
