Psalm 130 Commentary

Psalm 130 Commentary

Depending on your background, salvation can be many things. To some, and because the evangelist talked about hell, salvation means being saved from hell.

Other individuals think of salvation in terms of freedom from addictions and a host of other enslaving habits.

We should be grateful to the LORD for Psalm 130. It explains to us what it means to be saved.

“He will save his people Israel from all their sins.” Verse 8 GNT.

And why not? “…His love is constant and He is always willing to save.” This is the gospel; the good news to the world.

Salvation means being saved from one’s sins. It is based on the mercy of the LORD God, not on any performance by the sinner.

Even the supplication by the sinner comes because the LORD helps it. The New Testament details the work of the Holy Spirit in this process.

Since it is sin that causes death, salvation, therefore, means the saint has attained eternal life even when they physically die. The resurrection from the dead into a blessed existence in the presence of the LORD makes this kind of thought not only practically possible but also a coming reality.

Sin is the core problem of humanity. This problem can only be solved by forgiveness from the Creator God. The psalmist knows it.

Humanity has lived in rebellion ever since the fall of Genesis 3.

The good news from this short but powerful psalm is that the LORD doesn’t “keep a record of our sins.” He forgives us. You can call Him for help. You can wait for the LORD.

The waiting is actually a deep-searching activity like the watchman’s desire for the dawn. Each time we sin, we know we have lacked a deep desire for righteousness. We also know we haven’t truly trusted the LORD to save us from sin.

But we also know that the LORD “is always willing to save.” All these thoughts and more can flood our minds each time we venture into Psalm 130. It is truly powerful.
