Psalm 125 Commentary
The Security of God’s People
Believers are rock-solid and stable. They cannot be shaken. The reason is simple: “The LORD surrounds His people”.
Mountains are permanent fixtures in creation. God’s presence with His people is compared to the mountains around Jerusalem. It is permanent!
But what has happened to Israel? Has the enemy breached the impenetrable defense system and attacked Israel? The enemy appears to have succeeded.
An appearance of success is temporal. The wicked will not always rule over the land of the righteous, by order of the Sovereign God. The seed of righteousness and the desire for godliness that the Creator God planted in His people isn’t at all in vain.
Believers are like Mount Zion. This is the first picture. The second picture explains the first picture. Believers are like Mount Zion in terms of stability and endurance because they are surrounded by the rock-solid Mountain, the LORD Jesus Christ. It is a permanent fixture around the saint.
The “now and forevermore” in verse two may suggest the thought of everlasting life that the New Testament saint has come to know. The resurrection of the saints will answer another question that naturally follows the thought of living forever.
This psalm reflects on the essence of life itself. The LORD Jesus Christ didn’t come to simply change governments. From one set of hands to another set. It isn’t a simple swap of positions. In human terms, we talk of changing governments when we should be talking about changing the names of governors. Governments never change!
The LORD Jesus Christ comes to change governments. Consequently, the rule of the wicked comes to an end. And at the Creator God’s timing, even an appearance of the rule itself by the wicked will be wiped out completely. The saint is warned not to take sides with wickedness lest he or she get the punishment due to the wicked.
In the meantime, the psalmist prays that the LORD do good to the righteous.
