Psalm 119 Commentary
Standing at 176 verses, Psalm 119 dwarfs a combination of 6 books of the Bible, starting with the smallest. Such is the importance of the subject of Psalm 119! It is all about the Word. It should be about the Word that became flesh and dwelt amongst us!
Reading Psalm 119 is like jumping into a loop. It doesn’t seem to have an end. And you keep hearing the same thing. It is the Law, or the Laws of the LORD, or the statutes, or His ways, or the Precepts, or the Decrees, or the Commands, or the Word, or Words of the LORD, or the Promise or Promises of the LORD.
Regardless of the term used, the Law of the LORD must be obeyed fully and diligently.
Always righteous, good, enduring, boundless, sweet, wonderful, the Word of the LORD is eternal.
The saint will have found something more precious than gold, than pure gold. Is there something that can delight more than riches? Yes. The Word of the LORD!
There is more: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Verse 105.
Or, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Verse 11.
Psalm 119 is great. It is a celebration of the Word of God. It is honoring the LORD Jesus Christ, who is the Word of the LORD. The repetitions are a message by themselves. Praise should be on repeat in the saint’s life.
Treasure hunters can be happy whenever they are privileged to find the Word of the LORD. It is always a blessing to glance at these lines – life’s rule book. But it is actually more. When you hear the LORD Jesus Christ say that He is the light, your eyes open to verse 105 with endless importance.
The saint must remember, keep, and meditate on the Word of the LORD.
“I obey your statutes, for I love them greatly.” Verse 167. Reading this psalm provokes many thoughts. One of them is a question to the saint on their love for the Word of the LORD. Can it be described as a great love?
