Psalm 94 Commentary
The LORD Implored to Avenge His People
Let there be no confusion. The roadmap is clear. The wicked will be destroyed but not now. It is a future event. The godly will be avenged, but not now.
Vengeance exclusively resides with the Creator God. Verse 1.
But why does the psalmist seem to “demand” for it? You get the impression that he would gladly avenge himself if given the means!
Keep guns away from reckless souls! Otherwise, they take the law into their own hands! Saints can easily get to this point, save for grace! Regardless, how happy the saint is for lack of means to commit wickedness!
It becomes a point of worship when the saint can wait upon the LORD for vengeance even when they can afford it!
But we also know the heart of this psalm. The son “has” the heart of the Father. He hates wickedness, just like his Father. He has heard his Father talk about vengeance at “His own time”. So he repeats his Father’s word.
We can look at it now and appreciate the Father’s timing. If vengeance is executed now, no one would survive. Even the psalmist would fall on the wrong side of justice!
Time isn’t our enemy. It means salvation. Time equals chance – chance to accept God’s rule. Then sinners like you and me, and David, and the psalmist, and everyone else living can find salvation, and vengeance.
So the LORD God isn’t silent. He is actively involved minute by minute, day by day – week after week, and year after year. It means chance to receive salvation.
The LORD God hears. He understands. He knows.
Logic is a special gift from the LORD. A man becomes senseless before he becomes wicked. Indeed, it is utter senselessness to think that the Creator God lacks knowledge!
Heaven is a construction site. While the saint’s mansion is being erected, the wicked man’s pit is being dug. How the saint wants this work to be completed soonest! But the LORD allows more time for one or two people to make a decision for Jesus.
This means more trouble for the saint down here. But the LORD grants relief from these days of trouble. The saint can enjoy this relief today.
While we await the big mansion, the temptation to get cozy with the happenings of this world is very strong. So the LORD disciplines His own. He establishes laws for them to follow. He teaches them from His law. What a blessing!
This psalm brings together a host of answers to many troubling questions. Why is there so much suffering in the world? It is because of the wickedness of the ungodly. But the godly may also find themselves liking evil and that is exactly the reason the LORD disciplines them.
Won’t wickedness be cleared? Yes, it will be cleared when the pit is fully dug.
There is nothing overly complicated here. Thank God for this teaching and we remain blessed and disciplined.
