Exodus 15 Commentary

Exodus 15 Commentary

Signs. Then tests. Signs are like lessons. After lessons, the student must be tested. Has Israel learned to trust the LORD God? That’s what the “Water Crisis” test will find out. Israel fails the test.

Grumbling against Moses means the people have yet to learn that Moses is a mouthpiece. He is not the source! They have lacked a real connection to the solution provider. They haven’t trusted the LORD God. They don’t know Him yet.

The LORD God who saw their misery and came down to save them in a mighty way cannot have trouble solving the water problem. But this thought is yet to register in their minds.

Solution = Grumbling + Crying

The solution comes after Israel grumbles against Moses and Moses cries out to the LORD God. The LORD God detests this formula. It represents failure. Faith has failed. Trust is absent.

Back to the classroom. The LORD God orders “trust” and obedience, but we shall see how it goes from this point.

The water crisis is a twister! It comes after a beautiful psalm. Moses and Israel sing it together. In the song, they acknowledge the LORD God as their savior. He is mighty, great, majestic in power, and highly exalted. They use all the good words possible!

But their response to the water crisis makes you question every word in their song. Did they mean them?

You haven’t passed your exam until you take your test well.
