Exodus 14b Commentary
No two Pharaohs are the same. Joseph’s Pharaoh is a good man. He despises his own magicians when Joseph shows up. He recognizes what he calls “the spirit of the gods” in Joseph.
Moses’ Pharaoh is a bad man. He is stubborn. He keeps his magicians even when they are well beaten.
We can draw a couple of thoughts. At first, it appears Moses’ Pharaoh is a logical mind. He wants proof. But when the proof comes, he still fails to accept the authority of the God of the Hebrews. Then you know it isn’t about logic, evidence, or intelligence.
A bad heart is one even without logic! It has a long life! It exists even after we remove what we feel supports it! Would you believe Jesus if He showed up in your room? Imagine you have removed all loose ends from your mind, will you believe in God?
Moses’ Pharaoh has shown us the possibility of unbelief even in the face of undeniable evidence! It’s a definition of a bad heart!
The tale of two Pharaohs tells us how the LORD God achieves His purposes. Joseph’s Pharaoh hosts Jacob and we all know the LORD God has engineered everything! Moses’ Pharaoh is a tool the LORD God uses to display His glory. Can you win against God?
It’s a good story we tell that the LORD God raised Moses from before day 1 for a special assignment. We often forget to mention that the same God raised Pharaoh for a special purpose. Romans 9 verse 17.
The LORD God is sovereign.
Moses’ Pharaoh cries about the loss of “their services” – free slave labor. It’s never God’s intention that a man is enriched by slave labor. God’s intention is that Israel bless the nations in the manner of Joseph versus Pharaoh. It happens when the nations see the God of the Hebrews – the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
