1 Peter 5 Commentary

1 Peter 5 Commentary

Verses 2 to 4 echo the words of Jesus to Peter: “Feed my lambs.”, “Take care of my sheep”, and “Feed my sheep”. John 21.

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them. Verse 2. A church leader would be described as an under-shepherd; Jesus is the Chief Shepherd. The sheep belong to Him – Sheep (male and female adult sheep) and Lambs (young sheep). Both must be fed; both need care.

“Not lording over those entrusted to you.” Peter reflects on the teaching of Jesus when He scolded the Pharisees for lording it over the people.

Cast your burdens on Him because He cares for you. What burdens do you have?

If you have to rejoice because you have suffered for the name of Jesus, then suffering isn’t one of the burdens! It’s not one of the items you cast on the LORD.

Resist the devil. The armor of God comes to mind.

The mention of Silas and Mark, both linked to Paul on numerous occasions, gives you the picture of a united force. The church was one, undivided in purpose and mission. We need to know what is important and stick together for it.  Babylon is probably a code name for Rome – Jewish believers knew better!

Probably the great apostle wants to remind us of our place in Babylon. It isn’t our home. We are foreigners who must long for the heavenly Jerusalem. But we are there on a mission.
