Hebrews 2b Commentary

Hebrews 2b Commentary

Hebrews is a book of impossible contrasts. Impossible because the human mind won’t adjust to accommodate “these things”. On one end is an ever taller Jesus – the exact representation of the Creator God. On the other end, the same Jesus becomes human.

But he doesn’t become human like us! He is the perfect human being. It’s us who should become like him. At this point, we become brothers and sisters together with him – the usage of ‘him’ and not ‘Him’ is deliberate.

Jesus is family! Verse 11 and 12.

Adoption can never be more strongly stated! Jesus’ mother becomes my mother. Jesus’ father becomes my father. Aren’t we brothers and sisters! It’s an invitation to “pay most attention” to the fact of regeneration that occurs when the Son rules in the saint’s life. Your life becomes Jesus-like. Abraham becomes your ancestor. You become more interested in the LORD’s promises to Abraham.

Same family? Yes. He has made them holy! Verse 11. Holiness is the blood that flows in the family! You know them by their holiness. They all look alike!

Hebrews won’t allow you time to settle. The same Jesus who is among the sanctified as a brother is now their father (Father). Verse 13. The concept of family continues. It stretches the point that “like begets like”. So the sons and daughters will look like their father. A mere glance at one of them immediately reveals his identity – he is the son of Mr. God. You won’t hide; your face blows your cover!

Reading the Book of Hebrews is a constant battle within. Apart from my verbal claims, is my face revealing my family links? Does my shape or walk say anything about my father?
