2 Thessalonians 2 Commentary

2 Thessalonians 2 Commentary

Is it for nothing, then, that I have kept myself pure and have not committed sin? The Thessalonians probably have this question in mind as they agonize over the false impression that the Day of the LORD is past.

Have the wicked escaped punishment?

The Day of the LORD is always a big thing and is always central to the Christian walk. This day means justice is finally done. The righteous get their prize while the wicked are booted out of God’s presence.

The Day of the LORD has two faces. The first face is described by the Old Testament, by several prophets. It points to the coming of the Messiah and His government. His government includes everything from peace to justice. We may think of it as both a period and a point when these things happen.

When the prophets talk about darkness and earthquakes on this day, your mind goes to the 3 hours of darkness that covered the earth at Calvary. There was also an earthquake. We think of Jesus’ birth in silent tones but “suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared…” Check the historical facts of Jesus’ birth, His ministry, life, death, and resurrection; they are no mere events. They fit the description of the Day of the LORD.

But more is yet to come. The second face is a distinct point when the LORD Jesus returns. Paul writes about it in clear terms. The Day of the LORD won’t be missed. Everyone will know about it. Not because news travels fast these days, but because the LORD, the Creator of everything will have called. And when He calls, even dead people answer and stand to listen!

This chapter is a miniature Book of Revelation! The Antichrist must come first. There are no dates to the coming of the Antichrist.

Never mind the Antichrist. Look forward to the LORD’s banquet. Justice will be served for the saint to enjoy. Their pain and suffering aren’t in vain, after all. This is God’s special gift to the Thessalonians. Paul prays and thanks God for them. They won’t be destroyed alongside the wicked!

This chapter stands to encourage the believer. Justice is coming. While the compassion period lasts, let men and women find the peace of the LORD in salvation.
