Romans 2 Commentary

We could attempt to segment the main thought. Chapter 1 began with group ‘1’ students. They are the ones God has called to belong to Jesus Christ – the good guys.

Group ‘2’ students are the ones that have rejected the Creator God for idols. They are in all sorts of things, LGBTQ included, sadly. They love evil and applaud evil-doers.

Group ‘3’ is ‘religious’ and takes comfort in believing they are ok. They sneer at group 2 guys. But they forget they are sinners without the rule of Jesus in their lives. Chapter 2 begins with group 3 guys. Group ‘3’ guys end up doing what group ‘2’ guys do even when they really don’t want to.

How do group ‘3’ guys know they are wrong? The Law of Moses defines right and wrong. But we also have common law that defines right and wrong for the Gentiles. So they don’t have any excuse.

Among group ‘3’ guys are men and women from both camps, the Jewish camp and the Gentile camp. The Jewish camp prides itself in the thought that they have kept the Law of Moses and that they have circumcision as an ID card. But do they truly keep the law? Failure to keep the law renders circumcision useless. The card is deactivated. Probably deleted from the system!

On the other hand, keep the law and you are done! Clean and white! The LORD applauds!

Neither is the Gentile man without guidance. Keep the common law written inside your heart and you are safe. The same common law condemns you if you fail.

So the scene is set for judgment. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The judgment comes tomorrow. Nevertheless, we have heard both sides of the argument in this chapter. Has the Jew kept the law – the written law? Has the Gentile kept the law – the common law written on men’s hearts?

So, what next? We shall hear more in the coming days.
