Zechariah 12 Commentary
Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. But the people of Jerusalem are strong because the LORD Almighty is their God. They will consume all the surrounding peoples right and left.
This is what we have known: the rule of the Son comes with victory and peace. Naturally, the saint has questions regarding the actual timing of these events.
The Apostle Paul hasn’t made it easier with his writings. “We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us”.
Zechariah’s prophecy looked to the future while Paul’s writings used the present tense – with the “happening-right-now” feel to it.
The saint struggles with the present environment in relation to the graphics presented by the prophets of the Old Testament. What is even more confounding are the statements of the LORD Jesus Christ. “But take heart! I have overcome the world”.
But even in these lines, there are strong hints to help us understand our times. In the midst of triumph or with the triumph is the Spirit of grace and supplication. “They will look on Me or to Me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son.”
Only God unlocks the mystery of salvation! For now, we know the LORD said, “It is finished”. He didn’t say, “I’m finished”. You have the choice of siding with the winning team. This is the good news of the New Testament!
Zechariah starts this chapter by introducing God as the one who stretches out the heavens (the universe), who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person. This is the same LORD Almighty who stations Himself within Jerusalem and becomes the strength of the saints. How can the saint lose the battle? Ponder these facts.
