Daniel 9 Commentary

Daniel is a physical man who interacts with the word of the LORD like we all do. He scans the scripture for items that relate to his own times and engages the LORD.
The great prophet Jeremiah was the writing type. The remnant must have kept the word of the LORD and referenced it in their prayers. Daniel has done it in this chapter. What an important lesson for the saint today. Read the scripture and underline items that relate to your life in real-time. Apply them in prayer.
Prayer and petition; fasting and ashes. There is an indication of seriousness. Attach importance to prayer. It’s not begging Heaven but it’s a statement of seriousness from a mind that can always be unserious about important matters. We can sit down to watch football for an hour; you know how we struggle to have quality time in the presence of the LORD! These bodies of ours deserve a beating!
Daniel references the Torah – the first five books of the holy script, probably Deuteronomy 28 is underlined. Has lived the fulfillment of the curses pronounced against the promiscuity of the nation. The LORD is just; the LORD is also compassionate. The nature and character of the LORD God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is referenced, probably as revealed to Moses in the Book of Exodus.
“LORD listen! LORD, forgive! LORD, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”
And the LORD’s answer?
The LORD bypasses the immediate return of the Jews under Ezra and Nehemiah. The construction of the temple under Zerubabbel is silent. These are miniature events that shouldn’t concern the prophet. There is more to the story. Underline the phrase ‘everlasting righteousness’ and know the LORD is talking about the times of Immanuel – the Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father; one whose government and peace know no end. Isaiah 9.
There is also the mention of the Messiah in the same tones as Isaiah 42, 49, 52, and 53 – the suffering Servant. The saint can look at all these items and see the grand plan of the LORD unfold perfectly.
