Ezekiel 18 Commentary

Ezekiel 18 Commentary

The one who sins is the one who will die. Or, do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them. Chapter 18 is underlined by these thoughts in an attempt to emphasize the point that individuals still had the chance to define their own destinies by repentance.

If the wicked man turns away from his wickedness, none of the sins committed previously would be remembered. Equally, the righteous man erases his good record by abandoning his faith. He suffers the punishment of the wicked.

The punishment for wickedness is interesting: death. But won’t everyone die? Don’t we all end up at the grave, righteous and unrighteous alike? What is the scripture talking about?

Is the LORD also powerless against the sting of death? We know the LORD hates the death of anyone! What is this death that the LORD is talking about?

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.” Psalm 116 verse 15.

Or, “The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.”

Oh, so there is something worse than the death we know – something that the LORD protects the saint from by physical death?

Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, get a new heart and a new spirit. Will this guarantee everlasting life?

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” John 11 verses 25 and 26.
