Ezekiel 15 Commentary
Israel is the vine. Her importance lies in the fruitfulness of the tree. The wood of the vine is useless. No one makes furniture with it!
The scripture draws our attention to the purpose for which Israel existed. She was meant to bear fruit. When a vine cannot serve this purpose, it is useless and easily becomes fuel – bad fuel for that matter!
The LORD subjects His creation to different standards. A vine is judged based on its fruitfulness. A sycamore tree that Zacchaeus climbed served its purpose on the occasion. He couldn’t have used a vine for this purpose. The saint is meant for fruitfulness. The Spirit of God resident within the saint is the source of this fruitfulness. Failure in this area means failure to serve a purpose for which the saint exists. You become useless.
Jerusalem is useless even before the LORD rains fire on it. It became useless the moment she stopped producing fruit. And in its shattered shape, the city is well beyond usefulness. Fruitfulness is the key word to ponder.
