Isaiah 44 Commentary

Isaiah 44 Commentary

Chapter 44 is yet another invitation to check the God facts against man-made pretensions. The LORD God is in His own class. He is the first and the Last; there is nothing in between. Won’t Jacob see it and return to his God?

The LORD God is so eager for reconciliation that He puts zero conditions for Israel’s return. He has forgiven them. Let them simply return. Let them come back to the LORD – to the worship of the one true God of Abraham. This is beautiful! Let not the saint complicate the sinner’s path back to his or her Creator God.

As usual, Isaiah is a mixed act. We can see the physical return to Jerusalem which is clearly different from the return to the LORD God in true worship. The physical Jerusalem would be inhabited as the LORD directed Cyrus. But will Israel return to her God? The LORD God has to convince His Israel.

Idolatry is nonsense. Check it out for yourself. If a man cannot save himself, what less what a man makes! It should be common knowledge! Why should we expect the science we manufacture to save us if we, the manufacturers of science, cannot save ourselves?

Is it not foolishness to expect technology to save us? We the creators of technology cannot save ourselves. There are boundaries we simply cannot cross. The LORD defines what heights we can possibly scale. Go ahead and examine it. Explore technology to its finest prints and see its emptiness.

If we cannot make ourselves happy, how can what we create make us happy? Entertainment is a huge industry but it is all vanity – the empty pursuit of joy. Only the LORD can provide it. Ponder it. Navigate the spaces of life and see it for yourself. What men and women make won’t fill the gap that the absence of the LORD creates.

Chapter 44 is one beautiful pearl inserted in the pages of the Old Testament but its real value is for my neighbors today. Let them hear the good news that the LORD has forgiven them. They simply return to the worship of the one true God, the Creator God – the LORD God Almighty.
