Psalm 122 Commentary
I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
This psalm celebrates the joy of being in God’s presence. God’s house is probably a direct reference to the temple. The city of Jerusalem had the rare privilege of hosting the House of God.
Then the psalmist prays for the peace of Jerusalem.
Firstly, we are looking at the importance of the joy of the LORD within the saint. It is personal and corporate as the saint finds himself amongst other believers. They all rejoice at the opportunity of going to ‘see’ the LORD God at the temple. The picture given is that of believers sharing a common joy as they unite for a common purpose.
There is joy in worshipping the LORD God. The greatest joy is found here. Life finds completion at this point. Anything outside this joy is emptiness and great frustration.
Secondly, the psalmist looks at the physical environment. Let there be peace and prosperity. It is a demand that the LORD puts on the saint to seek the prosperity of other believers. Their well-being is as important to the saint as his own well-being. Together they rejoice in the presence of the LORD; together they prosper in the physical environment.
