Psalm 76 Commentary

Psalm 76 Commentary

The weapons of war lie still. The land is enjoying rest. The people of God are enjoying rest. The exodus had this end in mind. Let Israel return to the land of promise and find rest. And the God of Jacob is responsible for this rest, having a pronounced judgment against Israel’s enemies.

The Creator God arose and the land quietened. The land feared. This is the only fear that the saint should have: the fear of God. With this fear, the saint fears nothing else. So the land remains secure.

The wrath of the LORD is not exhausted, and so we the survivors stay restrained. The fear of the LORD keeps us in check.

The saint stays with these facts and knows the value of submission.

Gifts or offerings from the neighboring lands may refer to the fear of the LORD in the neighboring lands; resulting from what they see in the children of God. The LORD is exalted by others when the saint submits in obedience to the word of the LORD.

Words about God and our faith in the LORD Jesus Christ are important. But it is the fear of God within the saint that is more important. Let the saint explain the fear of God as the reason why they haven’t reacted angrily to a false accusation or sinned even when the world expected them to do so.
