Job 28 Commentary

Job 28 Commentary

Having mocked the wisdom of his world, and having failed to find the right and balanced argument from the three friends, Job must now tell us where to find the true wisdom. From this angle, this chapter may not be an interruption to the normal flow of the story as suggested by the title in the NIV Bible.

Man’s search for value has taken him places. The effort is astounding. No obstacle is too great and nothing is too hidden. What must be found must be found. Mponeng gold mine in Gauteng province, South Africa, which goes down 3.9km to the center of the earth, is said to be the world’s deepest mine. Huge investment goes into developing the facilities and technology for extracting and processing this value.

But where can wisdom be found? From the evidence presented so far, wisdom cannot be found in the land of the living. No mortal comprehends its worth. Not even Mponeng’s expensively mined gold can buy wisdom!

God understands the way to it and He alone knows where it dwells. But God didn’t keep it to Himself. He packaged it appropriately for humanity as a special gift and said: “The fear of the LORD – that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding”
