2 Kings 7 Commentary

Second Kings 7 Commentary

http://www.lovingscripture.com

A group of 4 men sits down to deliberate on a matter. The outcome of their decision is a function of probability. It can go either way, so we think.

A more powerful army has laid siege to Samaria. Conditions within the City are fast deteriorating. We have a breaking point when women start cooking their own babies for a meal. Exactly as the LORD had mentioned.

“Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.” Deuteronomy 28 verse 53.

As things are reaching a breaking point in Samaria, the Aramean army is camped and celebrating the approaching victory. There is only one way and one outcome, so they think.

But who knows exactly what the LORD is doing? Who can tell if and when the LORD intervenes and how? Yet with hindsight, we can look at these events and tell that the LORD had complete control of every event, including the thought process of the 4 men. A normal logical debate had only one answer and that was the LORD’s way. The Aramean army simply answered the call from above without any options to either wait or investigate. The siege had one outcome as determined by the LORD; and that was the only way.

Through normal daily activities, we can see the workings of the LORD. This can be very amazing and at the same time mind-boggling. We are looking at a much bigger operation by a much bigger God. It is this God and LORD that the king’s servant belittles. He receives an appropriate punishment for it. The nation is also receiving an appropriate punishment for her idolatry, according to the word of the LORD in Deuteronomy 28.

When you read Deuteronomy 28 and the section from 15 to 68 you generally feel Moses is speaking in parables by using horrific pictures of consequences to warn the people. But when you read of women eating their own children like we saw yesterday, then you know Moses wasn’t joking. But again, who bothered reading the scriptures in Israel?

The scripture is speaking today on many issues that we are going through. Who wants to have a look? Who wants to check what the LORD is saying concerning these events? Who thinks of the LORD as being in charge and having control of events? Yes, the LORD is in control and has charge over His creation. Let not the saint belittle the LORD. Let not the saint fear. And when we have made the LORD too small in our eyes, let the saint repent.
