Psalm 65 Commentary
Creation is God’s workshop. It is a factory. Humanity is one important product. The material world is another.
Humanity functions as a praise team. But wickedness is a problem here, and so the LORD extends His forgiveness.
Each time we hear the word “the wicked”, our mind settles on someone we know who has committed sin against us/others. But this book has unequivocally, presented everyone as wicked. In this chapter, the psalmist admits that sin has overwhelmed him.
He seeks compassion from the Creator God. It’s a posture we all need to assume.
Regarding the material world, the LORD becomes the Earth-Tamer, Ocean-Pourer, Mountain-Maker, Hill-Dresser, and Muzzler of the sea storm. Creation is not without control. The LORD sits above everything.
This psalm recognizes the continuous presence of God’s hand in creation. For humanity, the value of God’s presence is in forgiveness. But for the material world, the LORD works by keeping the physical elements of creation in check. They function to display His beauty!
The tourism industry thrives on the thrill and awe of creation. Does humanity appreciate the Creator God for the wonders of creation? Praise should be a natural reaction as humanity experiences life. If it doesn’t happen, then humanity experiences forgiveness.
It is a blessing to be drawn into the presence of the LORD by way of forgiveness.
The LORD determines the shape of the physical elements of creation. But the LORD also answers the prayers of the saints. In a way, saints can participate in creation through their requests. The LORD shapes life according to the requests of the saints.
This psalm brings together several aspects of creation to the fore. Worship can be enriched by the thought that the LORD of creation is present in nature.
The temple in Zion is God’s house. But this psalm extends God’s house to the “farthest seas”. The mention of Zion and the temple in Jerusalem may appear to “localize” God. The teaching of scripture is that the LORD God is infinitely larger than the known human boundaries, physical or otherwise logical.
