Psalm 64 Commentary

Psalm 64 Commentary

The very fact that this psalm exists is proof that the psalmist thinks of God as the ultimate authority. He is just. Therefore, he can intervene.

Prayerlessness could be evidence that an individual feels they can make it all by themselves. It projects a society where God is distant and uninterested.

But God does intervene. So the psalmist prays or complains against his enemies.

The word “enemy” doesn’t exist until one is wicked and an evildoer.

Idolatry is the right word for it. One begins by disbelieving the existence of justice under God’s direct rule. Fear goes. “Who will see it?”

They will have deconstructed the character of God. God becomes a zero situation. He doesn’t see. He doesn’t care. He won’t act. They can have their way.

You need faith to be wicked. You need to believe that God won’t act. He won’t rise to defend the innocent. Nothing happens.

But God does intervene. “God will shoot them with his arrows”. If an evildoer has a minute to live, it’s always in the hope that they can submit to the leadership of the Son. It’s never more time for more wickedness!

The LORD God sees; Jehovah knows. He will shoot at them. He will not miss. They will come to complete ruin.

The psalmist drives the point that a time comes when the intelligence of evildoers becomes an object of ridicule.

They will proclaim the works of the LORD and ponder what He has done. At this point, no one will ask if God intervenes in human affairs at all. His works will be plain for all to see.

Instead of complaining, the righteous will now rejoice in the LORD. Life ends well for the upright, but in reality, it is the beginning of blessed immortality in the presence of God.

This is an important conclusion to any successful prayer session. The doubting and the complaining heart finds the peace of the LORD at the end of it all.
