Psalm 63 Commentary

Psalms 63 Commentary

David is in the Desert of Judah. Water is the most important commodity in the desert. What water is in the desert is what God is to David.

The graphics used in this psalm draw us to dependence on the LORD.

The abundance of water in the city doesn’t diminish its critical role in life. It is life itself! But the desert helps mortals fully appreciate the role of water as a life-support component.

David doesn’t exist without God.

This psalm invites the saint to reflect on their needs. These needs may be represented by various physical elements of creation. But how can hunger be a need for God?

Yes, food will quench hunger, but hunger remains a design parameter meant to fulfill a divine purpose.

“He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Deuteronomy 8 verse 3.

Thirst, like hunger, is caused by God, but humanity must understand that the real need is for God and not water or food. The psalm also encourages the saint to have the same intensity in their longing for the LORD God.

The picture changes from the desert to the Sanctuary. The life-supporting element can actually be found at the Sanctuary.

But what exactly is at the Sanctuary? The Sanctuary was a layered structure of holiness. At the core of the Sanctuary was the Ark, a small gold-coated wooden box.

Inside this box was the Word of God. Jesus is the Word of God! A search or a longing for God is a search for Jesus. This is religion made simple!

The LORD Jesus Christ is the water of life.

The graphics change again. David is now talking about the death threats on his life. But David is safe, as he has found life – the water of life.

We have pointers to blessed immortality in the presence of the eternal God, exactly as originally designed in the Garden of peace and tranquility.
