Psalm 61 Commentary

Psalm 61 Commentary

Verse 2 gives us the picture of a distant David praying for God’s intervention. The ‘ends of the earth’ statement may be a reference to the distance between David and God.

Of course, the LORD God is ever with the saint. But we do feel the distance from time to time. It is a cry from deep within mortals for God’s presence – a presence that the LORD God is yet to fully restore.

“May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever.” We are reminded of the LORD’S blessing in Genesis 1:28. The mandate to rule still remains. David refers to the physical throne, but the deeper meaning points to the need for dominion.

“Then I will ever sing in praise of your name and fulfill my vows day after day.” Verse 8. The Christian walk is a 24/7 operation. It involves a decision to honor God daily in perpetuity.

Mortals are wired for immortality. The psalmist thinks of “forever praise”. Immortality becomes a reality in the New Testament.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26
