Psalm 48 Commentary
Save for what Zion stands for, this psalm would be a difficult fit for our hearing. Many saints today have little appreciation of what it meant to have a mountain as a dwelling place.
In the days when the mighty ruled and when physical security meant everything, the mountain provided security. From the mountaintop, you could easily see the enemy approach and prepare for an assault in time. You descended on the enemy with ease, assisted by gravity. But the enemy had an uphill battle even before the real battle began.
God makes her secure forever.
From the thoughts of security and advantage, the psalm quickly draws our attention to God’s presence within the city. God becomes the physical security of the nation.
The works of the LORD are known worldwide. It is never a local situation only. So the praises are also worldwide.
The saint can walk about Zion, go round her, count her towers, consider her ramparts, view her citadels, and then tell everyone about it. Let our children know about the great works of the LORD!
Zion represented rest – the promised rest in the land flowing with milk and honey. Mount Zion is rest encapsulated.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11 verse 28.
It is the purpose of scripture to let us know about the life that we can leave behind. But importantly, there is a life and rest that can be had. The invitation still remains.
From this position of rest, walk about the new life. Check and compare. The saint will be glad that they are saved.
