Psalm 47 Commentary

Psalm 47 Commentary

The psalmist uses different elements of worship in praising the Great King. Clapping of hands, shouting, blowing of trumpets, and singing praises to God.

What’s the occasion? What explains the psalmist’s behavior?

The LORD Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. It is an acknowledgment of the rule of Christ overall. He is in charge!

When the world lives in fear of technological advancement, tyrannical rule, or evil creations of the few most powerful individuals, then you know our appreciation of the facts presented in this psalm is quite low.

God reigns over the nations.

The psalmist communicates to us the thoughts that must reside within the worshipper as they praise God. The mention of Abraham brings to the fore God’s covenant.

The victories and subsequent freedom point to the rule of the Messiah. It doesn’t point to the geopolitical administration of the peoples. It has nothing to do with political freedoms.

The kings of the earth belong to God. The thought underlines the reign of the Messiah over His creation. The picture that the rule of the Messiah is a small and confined effort, diminished in real value by increasing wickedness, is a false understanding of reality. God reigns over all. The Messiah is ever in charge!

Let praise flow with a deep appreciation that the Messiah reigns! Praise the LORD with understanding! The Creator God works in all things for the good of His own. Of course, the devil doesn’t know a thing about this mystery.
