Psalm 43 Commentary
The psalmist uses legal language where a lawyer pleads a case for the accused. Let God stand on the side of the psalmist against the oppressor.
Of course, we are tempted to think of a world without oppressors as a good world. We can easily forget that oppression or injustice is an object that exists in the world. Humans are carriers.
You cannot eliminate oppression by eliminating the oppressor!
The answer is found in verse 3: “Your light and Your truth”.
The New Testament has the details. Jesus is said to be the Light. He is also said to be the Truth. It’s Jesus who brings the saint to the holy hill, to God’s presence.
Then the saint can praise the LORD!
Psalm 43 is a continuation of Psalm 42. The thought is that mortals outside of Eden are in trouble. The soul is troubled. Trouble comes from the oppressor. All mortals are oppressors until individuals are guided by God’s Light and Truth.
It’s the only route back to the holy hill. Because this route is available, the psalmist asks, “Why are you cast down, O my soul?”
