Psalm 33 Commentary
There is a growing sense of insecurity. What is the world up to next? What will they come up with? What are they planning with AI? What other poisons have they come up with?
It feels like they have it within their means and power to say or do anything they dream of.
But where is the place of God, the Creator God of the righteous?
Yes, the righteous know the Creator God, the Sovereign God loves justice and righteousness. But God’s space has continued to shrink as injustice and unrighteousness increase!
This psalm answers this question.
The earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. Verse 5.
The bad choices of mortals won’t diminish the goodness of the LORD. Whoever is reading these lines should be grateful for an opportunity to say yes to Jesus. The next minute exists for this critical decision. Time means salvation! It flows out of the generosity of God, the goodness of the LORD God Almighty!
Yes, by the word of His mouth, the LORD commanded existence into existence. Further, He brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. Verse 10. It refers to the reign of the Son over His creation.
Read this psalm again and see that there is no space left uncovered by God’s rule, both in time and in space!
God’s rule hasn’t shrunk. The rule of the evil one, together with his minions, hasn’t increased or expanded. Verse 11 agrees with the following declaration: “The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations.”
“All generations” includes this generation, where we feel evil has taken so much root that we fear it might rule indefinitely.
Deception is a sponsored product of the evil one – creating an artificial absence of God’s goodness from the world, while creating an artificial overload of his rule. It comes down to the wrong perception that the evil one is strong.
Verse 18 is deeply important. The eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him. The remnant can rest secure in this fact. Their God (the Creator God) is fully in charge for all generations. Their souls shall He deliver from death!
Let the saint look at all this and rejoice. Let him sing to the LORD a new song! Let worship flow!
The material in this chapter feels current and familiar. Yes, you have read it from John 1. Then you know the Son’s rule is eternal! This chapter points humanity to the Son, to His rule, to His ultimate control of everything, and asks humanity to submit under His authority. Verse 8.
The saint can be happy and give thanks for all of this!
