Psalm 21 Commentary

Psalm 21 Commentary

The blessings of the LORD can be a source of great joy. Strength, victory, status, and life. The list can be endless if one cares to count!

On the list is a special blessing: The presence of the LORD. Verse 6.

In a world of zero adversity, these blessings would not exist. They would be needless! In a world of zero needs, no one would think of fame!

Adversity isn’t the only problem that humans face. The need for fame and a sense of achievement can easily overwhelm a man.

The LORD solved these two problems for David, which is why he was joyful. The LORD intervened, and David won his battles. David’s kingship solved David’s need for fame and honor. It was yet another gift from the LORD.

Yes, the LORD wanted a shepherd for His sheep, Israel. But there was honor for the tool that the LORD would use. It’s a revelation of Heavenly generosity!

Joy can be mined. You make a trip down memory lane, and you have it! Count your blessings. Many have enough to swim in, while their failings can hardly fill a cup! But the little in a cup can be so poisonous that all joy can disappear!

God’s blessings are of the kind that are always “pressed down, shaken together and overflowing.”

And David didn’t work for it! He mentions God’s mercy in verse 7. He also mentions his prayers. Verse 4. Saints must learn to ask.

This psalm reminds us to look back at our blessings and praise the LORD from a position of knowledge. It is personal.
