Psalm 16 Commentary
This psalm flows smoothly until David makes an outrageous claim. He declares that the LORD will not allow him to experience decay.
But David is mortal, and not immortal.
So, what is David talking about?
This psalm looked to the future and pointed to the Messiah.
Of course, Jesus died, but His body never decayed. He was resurrected. Believers have the same hope as they look forward to their own resurrection.
Yes, their physical bodies will experience death and decay, but they will also experience resurrection at an appointed time.
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” John 11:25.
If Psalm 16 is talking about the resurrection of the Messiah, then Jesus is talking about the resurrection of God’s children.
David’s psalm is more important today than it was in his day.
The psalm is actually a prayer of declarations. There were countless gods in David’s time. But the LORD alone was David’s portion in the land of the living. The LORD made David’s lot secure. He canceled David’s ticket to hell. David discussed both sides of existence. His present was secure, but his future, his afterlife, was also secure.
The saint can bask in this knowledge: “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
